Ultimate Morocco 11-Day Journey : Chefchaouen, Fes, Sahara, Marrakech & Essaouira.
Casablanca → Rabat → Chefchaouen → Fes → Merzouga → Ouarzazate → Marrakech → Essaouira → Marrakech
Trip style : Private, cultural, scenic & adventurous
Best for : First-time visitors who want Morocco’s imperial cities, blue mountain towns, Sahara, kasbahs, High Atlas and Atlantic coast
Transport : Private vehicle with English/French-speaking driver; local guides in Fes and Marrakech
Nights : Rabat (1) • Chefchaouen (1) • Fes (2) • Merzouga (1) • Ouarzazate (1) • Marrakech (3) • Essaouira (1) = 10 Nights
Day 1 — Casablanca → Rabat Driving: ~1.5 Hours
Hassan II Mosque & Morocco’s Imperial Capital
Overnight: Rabat
Arrive in Casablanca and begin your Moroccan adventure with the spectacular Hassan II Mosque, dramatically positioned beside the Atlantic Ocean. Take a guided visit to appreciate its marble, carved cedar, zellij tilework and enormous prayer hall.
After lunch, drive approximately 1 hour to Rabat.
Explore:
- Chellah Necropolis — Roman ruins and medieval Islamic remains
- Kasbah of the Udayas — atmospheric white-and-blue streets overlooking the Bou Regreg River
- Andalusian Gardens
- Hassan Tower
- Mausoleum of Mohammed V
In the evening, enjoy your first Moroccan dinner in a traditional riad.
Overnight: Rabat — traditional riad
Day 2 — Rabat → Chefchaouen Driving: ~4 hours, plus Akchour stop
Rif Mountains & the Blue Pearl
Overnight: Chefchaouen
After breakfast, head north through the Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen.
For an active version of the day, stop near Akchour for a hike to the waterfalls and natural pools. Allow roughly 2–3 hours for the hike, depending on fitness and trail conditions.
Continue to Chefchaouen and check into your riad.
Spend the afternoon exploring the famous blue medina:
- Plaza Uta el-Hammam
- Kasbah Museum and gardens
- Grand Mosque exterior
- Blue-painted lanes and artisan shops
- Local cafés and traditional handicrafts
Near sunset, hike to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint for one of Morocco’s best panoramas.
Overnight : Chefchaouen — boutique riad
Important : If your priority is a relaxed trip, I would make Akchour optional. Trying to combine a substantial hike with Rabat-to-Chefchaouen travel and a full Chefchaouen visit can make this day tiring.
Day 3 — Chefchaouen → Volubilis → Meknes → Fes Driving: ~4–5 hours excluding sightseeing
Roman Ruins & Imperial Morocco
Overnight: Fes
Leave Chefchaouen after breakfast and travel south.
Your first major stop is Volubilis, Morocco’s spectacular Roman archaeological site. Spend around 1.5–2 hours exploring its temples, basilica, ancient streets and remarkably preserved mosaics.
Continue to Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities.
Visit:
- Bab al-Mansour
- Place El Hedim
- Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail
- Imperial granaries and stables
- Historic medina
Continue to Fes.
Before checking into your riad, drive up to the Merenid Tombs for a panoramic view over Fes, particularly beautiful around sunset.
Overnight: Fes — luxury traditional riad
Day 4 — Fes
Full-Day Exploration of the Medieval Medina
Overnight: Fes
This is your dedicated Fes day, and I strongly recommend using a private licensed local guide.
Enter the ancient medina through Bab Boujloud, the famous blue gate, and explore the extraordinary maze of Fes el-Bali.
Highlights include:
- Bab Boujloud
- Bou Inania Madrasa
- Nejjarine Square and Museum
- Attarine Madrasa
- Al-Qarawiyyin area
- Traditional souks
- Chouara Tannery
- Artisan workshops
- Berber carpets
- Leather goods
- Copper and brass workshops
- Zellij craftsmen
Have lunch in a traditional restaurant or riad.
In the afternoon, continue through the quieter parts of the medina before returning to your accommodation.
Evening option: Moroccan cooking class — learn how to prepare a traditional tagine, salads and Moroccan mint tea.
Overnight: Fes
Day 5 — Fes → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Erfoud → Merzouga Driving: ~7 hours
The Road to the Sahara
Overnight: Sahara Desert Camp
Today is one of the great road journeys of Morocco.
Leave Fes early and climb through the Middle Atlas Mountains.
Stop around Ifrane and continue through the cedar forests, where you may encounter Barbary macaques.
Continue toward Midelt, the famous apple-growing town, for lunch.
Then cross the dramatic landscapes toward the Ziz Valley.
Stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the enormous palm-filled oasis.
Continue through Erfoud, famous for fossils and dates, before reaching Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi.
Late afternoon:
🐪 Camel trek into the Sahara
🌅 Sunset over the dunes
🏕️ Luxury desert camp
🍽️ Traditional Moroccan dinner
🥁 Berber/Amazigh music around the campfire
✨ Stargazing beneath the Sahara sky
Overnight: Luxury desert camp, Erg Chebbi
My recommendation
Choose a high-quality luxury desert camp with private tent, private bathroom and proper beds rather than a basic camp. It makes a huge difference after the long journey.
Day 6 — Merzouga → Rissani → Todra Gorge → Dades/Kelaat M’Gouna → Ouarzazate Driving: ~5–6 hours
Kasbahs, Gorges & the Valley of Roses
Overnight: Ouarzazate
Wake early for the Sahara sunrise.
After breakfast, you can try sandboarding before leaving Erg Chebbi.
Continue to Khemliya, a village known for its traditional Gnawa/Amazigh musical heritage.
Then visit Rissani, historically one of the major caravan centers of southern Morocco.
Continue west through the desert landscapes toward Tinghir.
Todra Gorge
Stop at the dramatic Todra Gorge, where towering limestone cliffs rise on either side of the valley.
Take a short walk through the gorge.
Continue along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing palm groves, fortified villages and dramatic mud-brick architecture.
Drive through Boumalne Dades and the Valley of Roses, particularly attractive in spring.
Continue to Ouarzazate.
Overnight: Ouarzazate — boutique hotel/riad
Day 7 — Ouarzazate → Aït Benhaddou → High Atlas → Marrakech Driving: ~4 hours
Kasbahs, Cinema & the Tizi n’Tichka Pass
Overnight: Marrakech
Begin with Aït Benhaddou, one of Morocco’s most spectacular fortified villages and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Walk through the ksar’s narrow lanes and climb toward the old granary for panoramic views.
Then continue toward Ouarzazate.
If you’re interested in cinema, you can visit one of the city’s film studios.
Afterward, begin the spectacular ascent through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass.
Stop at mountain viewpoints and an argan oil cooperative along the route.
Descend toward Marrakech.
Arrive in the late afternoon or early evening.
After checking in, head directly to Jemaa el-Fna.
As evening arrives, the square transforms into an extraordinary open-air spectacle of food stalls, musicians, storytellers and performers.
Enjoy dinner from a rooftop overlooking the square.
Overnight: Marrakech — luxury riad/hotel
Day 8 — Marrakech
Palaces, Gardens & the Red City
Overnight: Marrakech
Today is dedicated entirely to Marrakech.
Start early, before the medina becomes busy.
Visit:
- Bahia Palace
- Saadian Tombs
- El Badi Palace
- Mellah
- Koutoubia Mosque and gardens
- Traditional riad architecture
- Souks around Jemaa el-Fna
After lunch, slow the pace.
Visit Majorelle Garden and, if interested, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum.
Return to your riad for some downtime.
In the evening, return to Jemaa el-Fna and explore the souks after dark.
Overnight: Marrakech
Day 9 — Marrakech
Artisans, Madrasa & Secret Souks
Overnight: Marrakech
Keep today slightly slower after several demanding travel days.
Begin with the magnificent Ben Youssef Madrasa, famous for its intricate zellij, carved cedar, stucco and Islamic architecture.
Then explore the northern souks:
- Souk Semmarine
- Souk Attarine
- Souk Chouari
- Souk Smata
- Dyers’ Souk
- Bab El Khemis
This is the perfect day for shopping and meeting artisans.
Consider arranging a private Moroccan cooking class in the afternoon.
Alternative
If you don’t want another full day inside Marrakech, replace part of today’s program with a half-day Atlas Mountains excursion to a Berber/Amazigh village and return to Marrakech in the afternoon.
Overnight: Marrakech
Day 10 — Marrakech → Essaouira
Atlantic Coast & Bohemian Morocco
Overnight: Essaouira
Leave Marrakech after breakfast and head west toward the Atlantic.
The landscape gradually changes from the interior plains to the famous argan forests.
Arrive in Essaouira around midday.
After lunch, explore the historic port city.
Visit:
- Skala de la Kasbah
- Historic cannons and Atlantic ramparts
- UNESCO-listed medina
- Artisan workshops
- Mellah & Jewish Heritages.
- Essaouira port
- Fishing harbor
Enjoy freshly grilled seafood at the port.
Then walk along the beach around sunset.
Optional adventure
Essaouira is famous for its strong Atlantic winds and is excellent for kiteboarding and windsurfing. A lesson can be arranged if you’d like an active final day.
Overnight: Essaouira — oceanfront/boutique riad
Day 11 — Essaouira → Marrakech Airport
Final Moroccan Morning & Departure
Enjoy a relaxed final breakfast.
Take one last walk through the medina or along the beach.
If your flight is late enough, depart Essaouira after breakfast and drive to Marrakech.
Allow approximately 3 hours for the transfer, plus a safety buffer for airport check-in.
Trip ends: Marrakech Airport

Why I would choose this version
The biggest improvement is not adding more sights—it’s protecting the experience.
You have several very long travel days, particularly Fes → Merzouga and Merzouga → Ouarzazate. Therefore, I would avoid stuffing every possible attraction into those days.
The ideal rhythm is:
Imperial cities → Blue Mountains → Roman history → Medieval Fes → Sahara → Kasbah country → High Atlas → Marrakech → Atlantic coast
That gives you a genuinely varied Morocco experience rather than feeling like you’re simply checking destinations off a list.
